'Five years ago, after graduation, I started out at what was then GeoDelft. I always wanted to do something different, and I thought mining looked cool. A lot of my colleagues studied geo-engineering, the subject I graduated in. My ambition was to work on GIS applications and visualisation in combination with geotechnology. All those things come together in the games we develop, with the Dike Patrol game as a good example. We use games to teach up-and-coming dike inspectors how to recognise hazardous situations like cracks in dike bodies and piping. We are also working on a game for geotechnological soil surveys and another for new staff. There is a sort of second-life environment that allows you to get to know the organisation and your colleagues without running up against the problem of physical distances. We work in a team of programmers, game designers, 3D specialists, graduates and students. That's great fun: it generates energy, because everybody has a slightly different take on the project.'
'At Deltares, there is a lot of interest in serious gaming from other disciplines. So it looks likely that we will be tackling more subjects using gaming.'
'In the years that I have been working here, I have always had the opportunity to develop. We will be making lots of great games in the future.'
