assignment/short description
In the period from September 2002 to September 2003 Deltares (formerly WL | Delft Hydraulics),
together with MARIN (Wageningen) and Risk Support Ltd. (London) have carried out a comprehensive
study into the navigational safety of the shipment of LNG to a terminal inside the Ria de
Ferrol in Galicia, Spain. Our client was REGANOSA (Regasificadora del Noroeste, S.A. ), located
in Mugardos (A Coruna), Spain.
The location of the future terminal is singular because of the special characteristics of the entrance
connecting the natural harbour with the sea. The entrance consists of a passage between natural
rock slopes providing the harbour with exceptionally good sheltering against sea and swell. Due to
the tidal flow through this entrance, the entry or departure manoeuvre is best performed at slack
tide with limited wind speeds.
