assignment/short description
Ponta do Oeste, S.A., a publicly funded society for the promotion and development of the west of Madeira, built a marina in the village of Lugar de Baixo (Madeira, Portugal) in 2004. During 2005 there were three storms that have reportedly caused severe structural damage to the breakwater and damage to the marina fingers and berths of the newly built marina. Since then, Deltares | Delft Hydraulics has been involved in studies on the existing and alternative designs for the breakwater of the marina of Lugar de Baixo. The studies involved the determination of the wave heigt at the location and 2D and 3D physical modelling of the various alternatives for the renovation. Based on the study results, the Client could decide on appropriate measures to provide sufficient sheltering for the marina of Lugar de Baixo.
