Impacts of peat land drainage in Sumatra and Borneo

Client: Ausaid, Singapore Government

assignment/short description

Improper drainage of peatlands contributes considerably to the worldwide production of CO2. Deltares participates in various research projects in Asia to assess the actual impacts. Examples are: EMRP Master Plan project (see http://www.masterplan-emrp.org/en/ ), Kampar Science Based Management Project (see http://www.geog.le.ac.uk/carbopeat/media/pdf/yogyapapers/p12.pdf ), Kalimantan Forest Conservation Project (KFCP; for Ausaid), and the SDWA Peat land Programme (with National University of Singapore, for Singapore Government).

Impacts and vulnerabilities studied are carbon emissions and fire risk as well as increased flooding due to subsidence of the peat surface; both are modelled for large project areas using Delft-PEAT (Peat land Emission Assessment Tool) software.
