assignment/short description
(Adaptive Capacity to Extreme Events in the Rhine basin). The ACER project aims at identifying how long term scenarios such as climate change, socio economic developments, spatial planning and institutional changes influence discharge behavior and water management in the Rhine basin. Deltares participates in an international consortium to develop an integrated Rhine model that enables quantifying the effects of long-term trends on the frequency and magnitude of floods and droughts in the Rhine.
An important issue is to assess future probabilities of extreme flood and drought events. Different water management strategies (dikes, retention, land use change, insurance, etc) will be developed to cope with future impacts. The strategies are targeted at areas in both Germany and the Netherlands and will be developed with stakeholders from both countries in a series of workshops.
The strategies will be evaluated as to how they mitigate extreme events and lower risk (probability times damage) in especially the NiederRhein area at the border of Germany and the Netherlands.
