assignment/short description
In response to the continuous development and urbanization of the rural New Territories, the Drainage Services Department of Hong Kong commissioned in April 2008 a study to update an existing Master Plan for the Yuen Long & North Districts. The area is subject to high intensity rainfall, generating flash floods which are drainedto the surrounding seas within a few hours. Hydrological and hydraulic processes are very complex, especiallywhen high intensity rainfall occurs, such as the 145 mm measured during one hour on June 6, 2008.
For this study Deltares was contracted by Mott MacDonald Ltd, Hong Kong to provide support on field surveys, collection and statistical analysis of data, mathematical modelling of the drainage system behaviour, estimating climate change impacts, green channel design, sedimentation in drainage channels and receiving estuaries, impacts and management of mangroves, designing sustainable urban drainage systems, recommending improvements of the Hong Kong storm drainage manual and analyzing flood management options. The project is a good example of how Deltares, as a knowledge institute, provides a win win situation for all parties involved by teaming up with a local consulting firm.
