Over the past 50 years The Republic of Korea has accomplished remarkable economic development. The country is adapting all its industrial policies so that they will be environmentally friendly to cope with ever-unpredictable climate change. It is setting its sights on a new national development vision of low carbon, green growth.
The Four Major Rivers Restoration Project (4MRRP) is intended to fundamentally prevent natural disasters like floods and droughts, protect the environment, especially the ecosystem, and promote culture and history tourism. The project will help create jobs and further economic growth, thereby broadening the horizon of the country’s green growth.
The 4MRRP is a comprehensive undertaking aimed at enhancing the quality of the environment around the rivers, which has been ignored up to now, and resolving water-related problems stemming from climate change. The project will turn the rivers into multi-purpose spaces where people can live in harmony with nature. It will also contribute to local economic and culture, as local residents will be able to make use of new infrastructure facilities and the riverside landscape. The project contains important elements, including dredging, bank reformation and other activities.
Each of the Four Major Rivers has a motto:
- The Han River: A River for Recreational Activities.
- The Nakdong River: A Clean River.
- The Geum River: A River for cultural Activities.
- The Yeongsan River: A Vibrant Haven for Wildlife and Tourists.
