Geotechnical monitoring

Monitoring consists of measuring phenomena in a smart, structured way, thinking beforehand about the measures required if the expected values are exceeded. That makes it an excellent tool for managing risks. In this way, monitoring makes it possible to adjust processes and to intervene when there is a risk of damage. Monitoring is also important for developing knowledge.

In addition to the actual measurement of the relevant quantities, it is important to record and transmit them automatically so that the alarm can be raised when necessary. This is important, for example, in critical construction projects, as in the case of the tram tunnel in The Hague (The Netherlands) just a few years ago and with the HSL bridge crossing the Hollandsch Diep (The Netherlands).

In other cases, the focus is on instrumentation for specific experiments such as the IJkdijk for studying dike technology. Deltares is developing the monitoring strategy there, supervising measurements conducted by other parties and, where necessary, conducting additional or benchmark measurements.
