Model Hall
The model hall is part of the Deltares Geotechnical Test Centre. This multi functional hall is equipped with all the utilities necessary to conduct research on physical ground models. In close cooperation with our clients, we can use existing set-ups, or design and construct new ones.
This way, we can conduct model tests in a controlled and reproducible manner. Because of its generic set-up, it is relatively easy to create all necessary conditions to carry out tests. In addition, data acquisition and video registrations is organized in such a way that all essential information is recorded.
Reducing design risks
The model hall contains a large and small model container, a large triaxial cell, climate chambers and set-ups for piping research and for Geotextile tests. By combining the model hall’s possibilities with the experience and knowledge of our experts, it is possible to monitor the performed calculations or the project to be realised at an early stage of the project and reduce or even eliminate possible design risks. The model hall is furthermore the perfect spot for researchers and students to conduct research while using the available knowledge and means.
Projects
Some examples:
- Research into functioning and optimizing of Geotextile;
- Research into the phenomenon of piping near dikes;
- Determine influence of subsiding soil near (gas)connections on founded structures;
- Geothermic research;
- Research into grouting applications.
Available set-up
Besides the possibility to design and construct a task-specific set-up, the model hall contains the following standard set-ups:

- Maximum dimensions ground model 4.00 x 2.50 x 1.17m (l x w x h)
- Fluidisation system to create homogenic sand packages with required density
- Excavator with frame for plungers and/or hoist purposes
Small model container
- Maximum dimensions ground model 2.00 x 1.00 x 1.10m (l x w x h)
- Transparent front and back
- Fluidisation systems to create homogenic sand packages with required density
- Equipped with frame for plungers and/or hoist purposes
Piping-set-up
- Maximum dimensions ground model 2 x 0.9 x 0.4 (l x w x h)
