Industrial construction and geo-ecology

Deltares acts as strategic partner for building businesses by supporting projects and by participation in system renewal platforms.

For industry partners newly developed knowledge is applied to prevent risks and to provide construction processes with a durable geotechnical quality. Deltares is acting as independent geotechnical consultant for geotechnical and geo-ecological project questions. The activities are characterized by Second Opinion, Specialist Advice and Contract Research. The route field investigation (link In-situ research)- geotechnical laboratory research (link Lab Grondonderzoek)- geotechnical recommendations is covered.

For Industry Construction the following items can be mentioned:

• risk control and use of geotechnical and geohydrologische expertise for design and management of industrial process installations (nuclear, petrochemical, chemical, port areas, tank storage, mining construction);
• foundation behaviour under static and dynamic loads;
• monitoring protocols and the execution of measurements;
• Bearing capacity testing of foundation piles;
• design of compressor foundations and vibration insulation;
• prevention of soil liquefaction;
• subsidence of ground level and consequences of underground construction activities;
• analysis and impact control of earthquakes.
• control of construction activities with a high risk profile (heavy crane loads, building excavations within process installations).

For geo-ecology the following items can be mentioned:

• model development for (bio) chemical reduction, conversion and transport processes;
• durable management of polluted areas and dumping grounds;
• drawing up in-company geotechnical standards, standards and monitoring plans for ground quality and groundwater quality;
• cooperation within networks like NICOLE and ELGIP;
• sustainable technology development in EU-projects (UPSOIL, iSoil, ModelPROBE, Advance ETV, FloodProbe);
• application of the new developments BioSealing and BioGrout (www.smartsoils.com).

Uncertainties and risks

• DeltaBrain, is an initiative by Deltares and a number of project partners. Deltares DeltaBrain (formely GeoBrain) provides comprehensive information on all aspects of geotechnical engineering.
