Flood risk analysis and flood risk management

banner

The majority of the world’s population lives in areas that are potentially threatened by floods. Climate change increases the probability of extreme events. Population growth and economic development increase the potential impact of flooding. Deltares helps clients to map out flood risks. We give advice on measures to mitigate those risks and assess the possible impacts of flooding.

Flood risk analysis

Deltares assesses flood risks by carrying out integrated risk analyses covering the probability and impact of flooding. We estimate flood probability by confronting water levels and waves with the strength of levees. Our Sobek or 2D current computer simulations show the possible impacts of flooding. Deltares maps out the vulnerability of an area in the event of a flood and studies the effect of climate change and spatial planning on flood risk. We also look into the consequences of a possible flood, like the economic damage, possible casualties and environmental impacts.

Managing flood risks

Risk analysis provides the basis for recommendations on improving flood risk management. Deltares advises clients on safety standards, strengthening of water defences and creating more room for rivers. Our recommendations can take many forms, such as proposals for more flood-resilient spatial planning to make an area less vulnerable. Deltares gives advice, taking into account the European Flood Risk Directive. We have the knowledge and tools to support Member States in the implementation of this Directive.
