Urban Drainage

Urban drainage systems are used to collect storm water and wastewater in urban areas. Malfunctioning of this system can result in flooding and pollution. With SOBEK-Urban 1DFLOW & SOBEK-Urban RR you can design, evaluate and improve urban drainage systems. During the one day course you will work with SOBEK-Urban 1DFLOW & SOBEK-Urban RR. Aim of this course is to improve your modelling skills and to get more out of SOBEK-Urban 1DFLOW & SOBEK-Urban RR.

Course background

Urban Drainage is dedicated to SOBEK-Urban 1DFLOW and SOBEK-Urban RR.

These modules are designed for 1D hydrodynamic modelling and simulation of wastewater and storm water systems. SOBEK-Urban 1DFLOW is based upon the complete de Saint Venant Equations. It contains a huge library of typical closed conduits, hydraulic structures and controllers plus rainfall runoff inflow and dry weather flows. It has an automatic drying and flooding procedure and easily handles complex networks of any size.
SOBEK-Urban RR contains rainfall runoff processes for various types of paved areas, such as streets, roofs and parking lots. Infiltration is treated as a time-dependent process following HORTON equation. You can use your own time and spatially varied rainfall pattern, historical data of storm events or long time series with or without dry periods.

Subjects

The course consists of short presentations and practical exercises. You will work on subjects like:

  • Setup of an urban schematization
  • Data validation
  • Hydraulic analysis of sewer systems
  • Emission and pollution from sewer systems
  • Statistical analysis
  • Effect of measures in sewer systems
  • Presentation of results.

Participants

The course is aimed at modellers from consultancy and engineering companies, municipalities, water boards and universities. You are expected to have some experience with SOBEK, or to have gone through the SOBEK tutorial “Hydrodynamics in sewers “. Experience with urban drainage is recommended.

Aim of the course

In this course you learn:

  • The hydraulic background of urban drainage modelling to improve your insight
  • How to check your schematization and results to improve the reliability of your advice
  • How to visualize your results to communicate your findings
  • How to use shortcuts to save time.

Program

The program of Urban Drainage (in brief):

  • Presentation: Introduction to urban water
  • Exercise: Data analysis and hydraulic analysis
  • Exercise: Series simulation, statistical analysis and emissions
  • Presentation: Design of wastewater and storm water systems
  • Exercise: Receiving surface water – an integrated approach
  • Presentation: Overland flow in cities
