Geotechnical instrumentation for field measurements

Course background

Delay and failure during construction projects are often related to uncertainties and limited knowledge of the subsoil and its interaction with the construction. Therefore, field measurements play a key-role in monitoring the performance of the building process. Measurements are used in quality control, safety assurance and in the observational method.

The observational method provides cost-effective advantages. The setup, type of instrumentation and evaluation of the results will be decisive on the success of your project.

Aim of the course

The course provides participants with a systematic risk-driven method for planning a monitoring programme, including many practical cases.

Description

The accent of the course will be on instrumentation for monitoring performance during construction and operation rather than instrumentation to determine in situ parameters. It includes technical presentations by major manufacturers of geotechnical instrumentation in the USA and Europe in addition to presentations by international users.

Excursion

The fourth day of the course is an optional day. During the morning we will start with a presentation of the North/South metroline project in Amsterdam. In the afternoon we will visit the building site at Amsterdam Central Station and the monitoring system in operation in the city’s centre.

Enrolment, fee and registration

The registration fee is € 1,450.-- for three days (50% discount for students) and € 325.-- for the optional fourth day with excursion. The course fee includes course documentation, the textbook Geotechnical Instrumentation for Monitoring Field Performance by John Dunnicliff, lunches and refreshments during the breaks. The fee does not include VAT. International participants from within the European Union are charged 0% VAT only when they provide their organizations VAT number. Participants from outside the European Union are exempt from VAT, hence 0% VAT will be charged.
