Course background
In Europe infrastructural networks are still growing and being used more intensively. To guarantee mobility after construction, costly maintenance is required. However, the public’s tolerance for congestion due to maintenance of rail and road works is losing ground. Settlement of soft soils increases maintenance frequencies.
Therefore, it is essential to design constructions that are less sensitive to settlements.
During the past decades several construction techniques have been developed to reduce settlements. These are referred to as soil improvement techniques, but in fact represent a wide variety of techniques.
Many contractors have developed their own procedure, based on different techniques such as lime-cement columns, piled constructions, rapid (over-)consolidation techniques and soil replacement. Many successes have been booked, but drawbacks also exist.
Aim of the course
The main objective of this two-day course is to learn and understand the design and execution for state-of-the-art soil improvement techniques. Practical examples and cases will visualize the theoretical backgrounds lectured in this course. Latest insights on these topics are revealed as a result of state-of-the-art research.
Excursion
The third day of the course is an optional day. The excursion will consist of a site visit and presentation on the backgrounds of a project in the Netherlands.
Price and registration
The registration fee is € 1,125.-- for two days (50% discount for students) and € 325.-- for the optional third day with excursion. The course fee includes course documentation, lunches and refreshments during the breaks. The fee does not include VAT. International participants from within the European Union are charged 0% VAT only when they provide their organizations VAT number.
