Course background

Knowledge of flow behaviour, both steady and unsteady, is necessary for optimal and safe use of fluid transportation in pipeline systems. This behaviour is dependent on all system characteristics. The system parameters, such as the pipeline profile and flow velocities, as well as the hydraulic properties of components (pumps, valves and check valves) play an important role.

This course focuses on pressure transients in pipeline systems. Besides this introductory course, Deltares has also organized an advanced course on pressure transients on 25 - 26 May 2011.

Aim of the course

The aim of the course is to give the participants enough insight into the phenomena of pressure transients to understand the hydraulic behaviour of a pipeline system, perform simple water hammer calculations and judge possible pressure surge measures and/or procedures. Furthermore, the participant will have the opportunity to exchange experiences with fellow participants and experts from Deltares.

The course is given over two days, which will be filled with presentations and exercises covering the theory of pressure transients.

The following lectures will be presented:

  • Introduction to hydraulics - fluid properties, pressure and pressure head
  • Introduction to pressure transients - definition and occurrence of pressure transients, propagation velocity of pressure waves, travel time, Joukowsky
  • Basic equations and boundary conditions - continuity and momentum, Bernoulli
  • Pressure transient phenomena - forces on pipelines, reflections, line packing Preventing pressure transients - methods and measures to limit the consequences of water hammer
  • Check valves - principles of operation, types, hydraulic characteristics for non-damped check valves, selection criteria
  • Rules of thumb - discussion of several guiding principles
  • Exercises and hands-on with Wanda - exercises using pen and paper or the software Wanda throughout the course.

Who should attend

This course is geared towards anyone who deals with the transportation and distribution of fluids in closed pipeline systems, as well as the design of such systems.

This includes engineers and controllers of pipeline systems and process installations. This course is also pertinent to suppliers of pumps, (air)valves and check valves. Bachelor working and thinking level and some knowledge of fluid mechanics is necessary

Enrolment, fee and registration

The registration fee is € 1,125.-- for two days (50% discount for students). The course fee includes course documentation, lunches and refreshments during the breaks.

The fee does not include VAT. International participants from within the European Union are charged 0% VAT only when they provide their organizations VAT number. Participants from outside the European Union are exempt from VAT, hence 0% VAT will be charged. Please use the electronic form on this website for registration.
